LI President heads to Ukraine as political stand-off boils over

Liberal International , woensdag 22 januari 2014

LI President, Hans van Baalen MEP, will visit Ukraine from 28-30 January amid growing tension in the capital, Kiev.

The LI President, who is also the ALDE Group (LI full member) spokesman on Ukraine, will be part of a European Parliament delegation which will speak with government, parliamentary opposition and demonstrators. During his visit, Hans van Baalen will meet the liberal European Party of Ukraine and its leader Mykola Katerynchuk.

Van Baalen supports an association treaty between the EU and Ukraine. Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych suspended the signing of the treaty under heavy pressure by Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Liberal International, and President Van Baalen in particular, have spoken out in support of the Ukrainian people since demonstrations began in November 2013. The announcement of the mission coincides with a recent escalation of violence in Ukraine.
