Hans van Baalen over de crisis in Libanon: “Lebanon deserves a pro-Lebanese government”

Hans van Baalen, president Liberal International , woensdag 24 oktober 2012

Following the bomb attack of last Friday that left the Chief of the Lebanese intelligence assassinated alongside his associates and innocent civilians, LI President Hans van Baalen MEP has expressed unequivocal support to the pro-democratic forces who demand full responsibility by those who have allowed such horrible attack on Lebanon to take place.

“I echo the words adopted by the 58th Congress of the Liberal International only a day after the bomb attack in Beirut: ‘Congress notes with alarm the assistance given to the Assad regime by the Governments of Iran and Iraq and Hizbollah in Lebanon, and condemns the atrocity in Beirut on 19th October as well as incursions of Syrian Government forces into Lebanon and Turkey.'

The acknowledgment by Prime Minister Mikati that the assassination of Lebanese chief intelligence Wissam al-Hassan was inspired by his work to protect Lebanese interests from Syrian involvement is a very worrisome confession that the current Lebanese government does not have full and sovereign control over its country,” said LI President Hans van Baalen.

He continued: “I strongly condemn not only the bomb attack and the murders, but the idea that people currently in the highest positions of the Lebanese administration serve the interests of other countries, and especially the interests of undemocratic regimes. Lebanon is a democracy, and the Lebanese people are a sovereign nation that has embraced democracy. The winners of the last elections were parties that want peace and democracy. The people of Lebanon deserve a government that will run the country from Beirut, and not from Damascus, Tehran or anywhere else. Lebanon deserves a pro-Lebanese government that will take care first and foremost the interest of its own people and of its own future.”

The 58th Congress of Liberal International that finished on Sunday in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, has admitted Al-Mustaqbal (Future Movement) as its member. Commenting to that LI President Hans van Baalen MEP said: “We unanimously welcomed the Future Movement as our member. We know them and their leadership. They are wise people, real democrats, people of peace that want bright future for all Lebanese people regardless of their religious or community belonging. For that they have our full support and the support of the entire international community. Under their leadership Lebanon will ensure its place in the family of free democratic nations”
