LI President: Defend Freedom of Speech

Liberal International , vrijdag 21 september 2012

In a recent statement, LI President Hans van Baalen MEP has spoken out strongly against the fact that the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz (SPD) has condemned the video Innocence of Muslims and its distribution. Commenting on the occasion Van Baalen said: “Freedom of speech can only be limited, in individual cases, by independent judges when there is incitement to violence or hatred. Schulz should have defended this freedom and should have condemned not only the violence around the world but also those religious leaders and governments which condoned or even actively promoted violence.”

Van Baalen supports Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb who is himself a Muslim and who has defended the freedom of speech principle in this case and has asked the faithful not to allow themselves to be provoked. The video proved to be quite controversial inciting violence against Western consulates and embassies all over the world which was then followed by a publication of a series of offensive cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in the French media.
